This is a good time to plant new trees, shrubs, bulbs, perennials, grass seed and sod. With cool weather and more moisture around, this allows the roots to grow in the soil very well. Bulbs that can be planted now include: iris, tulips, daffodils, crocus and other spring flowering bulbs. Hardy mums, pansy, ornamental cabbage and kale will give fall and winter interest now. All of these are good showy plants for the garden. Do not prune azaleas, rhododendrons and other spring shrubs now, as they have already set there buds for next years flowers. A good quality slow release fertilizer can be lightly applied around these plants. Evergreens such as boxwoods, hollies, yews and decidous trees can be fed with a slow release fertilizer. This is also the time to transplant peonies or divide them if you would like to multiply your plants. Houseplants that have been outdoors should be brought back inside this month. If it looks like it's needed, an insecticidal soap spray can be used on them to prevent bringing any insects back into the house. So, keep busy in the garden this month and it will reward you with fall beauty and spring flowers. by Pete Lublin, Horticulturist
